Peter Blake

Fine Art

Peter Blake is often called the "Godfather of British Pop art." He is one of Britain’s most famous international artists and to many the father of British Pop Art. The Venice Suite comprises twenty new screenprints inspired by his recent experiences in the Italian city. Depicting an imagined, fairytale vision of the city, the prints draw from a host of source material and were inspired by the artist’s 2007 visit to the Venice Art Biennale. Blake’s trademark collage style incorporates images culled from postcards, photographs and second-hand books, including details from familiar old masters alongside illustrations from vintage children’s books.

Peter Blake is one of the leading exponents of Pop Art. His work has often used images from the comics, magazines and the celebrity world to create colourful paintings and graphic prints that capture the flavour of the “swinging sixties” and the popular culture. He is most celebrated for the design cover of the Beatles’ Sergeant Pepper album. Yet his career spans five decades and he has worked with many subjects, used many different techniques in a variety of media. He is acclaimed by established and younger artists alike and bridges the divide between the Academy and the avant-garde. Blake was made a Royal Academician in 1981, received the Order of the British Empire in 1883 and Knighted in 2002.
